Right in the heart of Praça Velha, in the UNESCO city of Angra do Heroísmo, a few quirky arrows catch your eye. They point the way with a message: “Keep going. You’re about to find pieces of paradise.” and lead you to something unexpected: a bold splash of colour and creativity — a shop that doesn’t look like anything you'd expect in a historic town center. Think industrial design, bold blue tones, and even a repurposed phone booth acting as a fitting room. Yes, it’s that kind of vibe.

Bazalt Lab was born from the idea that there was room for something different on Terceira. Beatriz Paim, the founder, is originally from Terceira island but had been living in Lisbon for a few years. Coming back, she noticed the souvenir scene didn’t quite reflect the energy, humour, or creativity of the island, so she decided to create something that did.

The first test came during the Sanjoaninas festivities in June 2024, when Bazalt Lab opened as a pop-up. The response was so positive that what started as an experiment quickly turned into something more permanent. And just like that, a bold idea became a bold brand.

If you want to explore more about the city, check out our guide on the best places to visit in Angra do Heroísmo.

From t-shirts and sweatshirts to caps, tote bags, magnets, and posters, everything is made with intention. All the designs are custom-created by local designers, specifically for the brand.

The clothes are crafted using organic cotton and printed with water-based inks, and you can actually feel the difference when you touch the fabric. Quality isn’t just a word here, it’s a foundation. With a strong commitment to sustainability, they’re always working to shift more of their production to Portugal, with one of their sweatshirts already 100% made in the country.

The idea was never to create something exclusively for tourists. From the very beginning, Beatriz had a bigger vision than just selling souvenirs. Bazalt Lab was designed to be something that locals would want to wear too. The pieces are bold and full of character — exactly how Beatriz believes Terceira should be seen.

For us, Bazalt Lab offers the best souvenirs you can bring back from Terceira. Not only is it an authentic and unique piece that you won’t find anywhere else, but it’s also a product of high quality. By wearing or buying these pieces, you’re supporting local businesses and young, local producers. It’s a souvenir that carries a piece of the island, and its people, with you.
